O’Callaghan of Munster Clan
Society
An
affiliated society of The Council of Irish
Clans

Who
are we?
We
are an online society for people who, somewhere in their ancestry, share the
surname O’Callaghan, or one of the numerous modern variants such as Callaghan, O'Callahan,
Callahan, O'Kallaghan, Kallaghan, Kallahan, Kalahan,
Keelaghan, Kealahan
& Keelan etc
and who can trace their Callaghan lineage back to Munster in Ireland (ie counties Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary & Waterford).
These surnames are all derived from Cellachán
Cashel, the formidable Chief
of the Eóganachta tribe and King of Munster from AD
935 until 954 who, amongst many other famed accomplishments, is said to have
subdued the Vikings and defeated the father of Brian Boru of the Dal gCais, in battle.
DNA
testing reveals we are more than one bloodline, but history tells us that we
were once bound together as part of a historic fraternity, the O’Callaghan
of Munster Clan.
We
understand that Clans can invoke many feelings in Irish descendants from, at
one extreme, providing a sense ancestral connection and a sensation of immense
pride in their heritage to, at the opposite extreme, a sense that clans are
stuck in the past with archaic processes that are out of touch with the modern
world. As always, there is some truth in both perspectives, the world has moved
on but, at the same time, we can also be proud of our ancestors and the past.
In forming this clan society, our hope is that, with some thought, and your
help, it will be possible to create a society, which brings genuine benefits to
a modern-day members of the Callaghan clan.
Before
proceeding to discuss how we might achieve that, it is important to understand
that what is being proposed is the creation of a clan society, which is
distinct from the clan itself. The reasoning being that, clan membership is
something that most Irish people are born into (ie by
virtue of a person’s Irish family heritage, they are a ‘de facto’ member of a
given clan). For example, if you carry one of the variations of the Callaghan
surname, and your ancestry was rooted in Munster, then it is likely you are, by
birthright, a member of the O’Callaghan of Munster Clan, whether or not
engaging with your clan is part of your current life.
In
contrast, this clan society is something you can chose to join, or not. So,
with that explanation behind us, why would you become involved with this clan
society? That is something which will be discussed in the following paragraph.
What are the
Society’s Goals?
Our
aim is to create an online clan society that is run by the members, for the
members, who provide mutual support (ie helping
each other where we can). Once the society has established itself, it is hoped that
organisational roles can be rotated annually (to share the load) and, where
there is more than one person putting themselves forward for a role, the
decision would be made by members votes.
As
was discussed in the previous paragraph, the challenge facing us is to set up a
modern clan society which delivers benefits to its members (ie
you, the reader). Thus, at this initial phase, which runs until the end of 2026,
we are in a listening mode, soliciting your suggestions for how we might form a
society that works for you.
First,
we need to decide on the society’s goals. To help with that, we now describe
some possible goals, which you can endorse, build upon or suggest entirely new
goals.
·
Foster
and facilitate a clan spirit, diversity, friendship and networking amongst clan
members.
·
Facilitate
the preservation of the history, folklore, and traditions of our clan.
·
Help
each other to understand our family roots and connections.
·
Provide
mutual support for member projects which, for example, might aim to provide
fresh insights to the ever-changing structure and composition of our clan.
·
Enable
members to organise international and regional gatherings (or forums), either
online or in-person, with the purpose of allowing members to network with each
other.
Managing
the Society?
As
mentioned in the preceding section, we are aiming for the society to be run
by members, for members. Ideally, we want to minimise the need for
management roles. While the vast majority of members would simply be enjoy the
society’s benefits, for this society to function, some members would need to be
part of volunteer teams that facilitate aspects of the society. The intention
is to create a small team of people to cover each task, so as to minimise the
load on any one individual. As with the goals of the society (above), we now
invite your suggestions for the type of roles we should have, and how they might
be organised. As before, we will describe some possible options, as an aid to
help you think. You can either endorse these ideas or come up with your own.
·
Writing Team
(members
who might write occasional short articles about Callaghan history, genealogy or
family research for online webpages or a newsletter)
·
Media Team
(members who help the society with publicity, social media postings etc)
·
Website Team
(being part of the team that maintains and expands the society’s webpages,
as the society grows)
·
Admin Team
(first point of contact for potential and existing members etc)
·
Advisory Team
(members
who might be willing to share their experiences of genealogy research to help
other members)
·
Executive Team (akin
to "Ceann Fine"
& "tánaiste" - being
the public figurehead and senior executive overseeing operations)
As
discussed previously, we imagine these teams would not be permanent fixtures,
and would function as fairly fluid units, with people contributing as and when
commitments in their lives allow (ie as they juggle
jobs, family and other commitments). At this early stage, we are also open to
suggestions as to how to better manage any aspect of the clan society.
Is There a
Membership Fee?
The society will be
is run by volunteers (its members) for its members; thus, we don’t envisage
charging any membership fee.
What
Are the Next Steps?
If
you have any opinions on the above, and are willing to share them with us
please email us at “O'CallaghanOfMunsterClan” (click to open
an email client)
Alternatively,
if are interested in joining this society either as a regular member, or
as part of one of the volunteer teams, or if you have any helpful
suggestions, please contact us by emailing “O'CallaghanOfMunsterClan” (click to open
an email client).
Currently,
the society is in the very early stages of being set up. Thus, before we
proceed to invest significant time into this, we need to assess the demand for
an O’Callaghan of Munster Clan Society. As a consequence, simply
registering your support or interest in becoming a member is very helpful to
us, since it allows us to assess the demand that exists for establishing this
society. We plan to leave this call open for the remainder of 2026 and, depending
on the response, decide whether to move forward with establishing an O’Callaghan
of Munster Clan Society.
Am I Eligible for Membership?
If you share our goals, and your
ancestors bore the surname Callaghan (or any variant) either now or sometime in
the past1, plus those family members originated from Munster
in Ireland, then this is the Clan society for you. To express your
support, or interest in joining our clan society, please email us at “O'CallaghanOfMunsterClan”
(click to open an email client).
Note 1: For example, the way inherited names work, the female
line of Callaghans lose their Callaghan surname but
clearly, they remain genetically part of the clan as much as any male and thus,
would be very much welcomed into this society.
The
Web Site
In
this new world, adjacency is no longer just a matter of geographic connection
but rather is one of technological connection. Thus, we are proposing that the
hub of our communications would be a web site to facilitate connections between
clan members (what you are looking at now is a prototype that would be further
developed in line with your feedback and suggestions).
